Maresfield is on the southern edge of the Ashdown Forest which was a deer maresfield estate agents letting agency image.hunting reserve from the time of King Edward II of England. Over the last 20-years the village has expanded due to three substantial housing developments that have helped to increase the village population.

The village is one and a half miles north of Uckfield which provides the closest main shopping centre and also the nearest train service. This provides peak hour trains to London Bridge with journey times of about 75-minutes.

The name of the village derives from the Saxon word for marsh or pool. Iron has played an important role in the history of the area. During the time when the Wealden iron industry flourished in the 16th century there were five iron furnaces within two miles of the village. One of the foundries was converted to produce gunpowder in the early 1800's.

In 1743 the Chequers Hotel was built as a coaching inn on the Brighton to London stagecoach route. Today it is owned by Wheelers and the restaurant is run under the supervision of Marco Pierre White.

Originally the Parish of Maresfield was quite large and until the 1800’s also included the villages of Nutley and Fairwarp, both north of Maresfield, along with the smaller settlements of Duddleswell and Horney Common.

Maresfield has its own primary school in Bonners CE Primary School, although some children travel to Manor Primary School in Uckfield. Secondary school children travel into Uckfield Community Technology College.
