Groombridge
« Back to Local Guides for Kent
Groombridge is on the borders of Kent and Sussex. In fact, part if it actually spills over into the neighbouring county and many people believe it should be absorbed completely into one county or the other.
Two sides of the triangular village green are framed by tile-hung weatherboarded cottages; there are pollarded lime trees and the whole creates an idyllic country scene.
At one corner of the green you'll find the Crown Inn dating from 1585 and thus pre-dating the 17th century brick church of St John the Evangelist. This began life as a chapel built by a Protestant owner of Groombridge Place in thanksgiving for the failure of Charles I's plans to marry the Catholic Infanta of Spain. Groombridge Place was used as a location for the 2005 film production of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice that starred Keira Knightley and Donald Sutherland.
Sadly, the rail connection to Tunbridge Wells was closed in 1985, but the Spa Valley Railway run steam trains at weekends connecting Tunbridge Wells West, High Rocks and Groombridge.
Fortunately, Tunbridge Wells is only 15 minutes drive away and there are regular train services to London that will get you there in less than an hour. Click Royal Tunbridge Wells to find out more about transport links to London, Gatwick and Heathrow.
