Hadlow Down, Cross In Hand and Mayfield are all within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Hadlow Down on the A272 is a small village lying on a ridge between Cross in Hand and Buxted on the main A272 road from Heathfield to Uckfield. It was a rural farming community with the centres of population lying either side of the main road, and until the Wealden Iron Industry got going in the in the 17th & 18th centuries, was a quiet and secluded spot.
Cross in Hand lies 2 miles to the West of Heathfield on the A265. Its name is said to derive from Cruce Manus, the latin for Cross in Hand and the name is believed to be based on the legend that the Crusaders assembled here before setting off for the Holy Lands to fight Saladin for Jerusalem.
Mayfield is a larger village nine miles south of Tunbridge Wells off the A267. It has a beautiful high street with raised red brick pavements. The village sign shows young woman and children in a flower-covered meadow, illustrating the Saxon origin of the village name Maghefeld, or Maid's Field. Like many places in the area, Mayfield prospered at the height of the iron industry, and much of its finest architecture dates from that time. "Middle House", in the High Street is a splendid oak beamed Tudor Inn and you will find the date 1575 carved into the barge boards.
