Heathfield

« Back to Local Guides for East Sussex

Heathfield is a small market town near the junction of two main roads: the A267 between Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne; and the A265 from Hawkhurst. It is almost equidistant – approx. 16 miles each way - from Tunbridge Wells and Eastbourne and is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Heathfield is on an ancient trackway - The Ridgeway - connecting the South Downs with Weald. Wealden iron brought prosperity to the town during the 16th & 17th centuries and the coming of the railway in 1880 gave it a new lease of life. Sadly, no trains run to Heathfield today, but the old railway line has not been allowed to become derelict and has been become a traffic-free cycleway, bridleway and walkway and part of the National Cycle Network. Running south from Heathfield, the Cuckoo Trail, as it is known, cuts through some of the prettiest countryside in Wealden. In the long-term there are plans for a southern extension to reach the coast, so that it can be linked with the planned "avenue verte" through the French countryside to the Normandy village of Forges-les-Eaux, with which Heathfield is twinned.

The original village - Old Heathfield - is now only part of the town as it has expanded over time.

Just five miles away you’ll find Stonegate Railway Station, from which there are regular trains to London with journey times just over an hour. Tunbridge Wells is just 15 minutes away and Hastings around 30 minutes.
