Rotherfield

« Back to Local Guides for East Sussex

Describing itself as “The Best Kept Secret in Sussex”   Rotherfield is the largest parish in East Sussex and also one of the oldest settlements within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, dating back to Saxon times.

Visitors will find antique shops, local village stores, traditional pubs selling real ales and an historic church – St Deny’s - that dates back to the 11 th Century. But the village website says it is not an ‘Olde Worlde’ tourist village, but that it's friendly, not quaint, surrounded by beauty and with a real sense of community.

You can discover the history of Rotherfield and find out more about what’s going on and what to do in the village, by downloading their 31-page pdf guide available free at Rotherfield-Countryside.org.uk

There is a regular train services to London Bridge from Crowborough Station which is actually at Jarvis Brook a little under 2 miles West of Rotherfield town centre. Train journey times to London are around 60 minutes.

Rotherfield is close to the A267 Tunbridge Wells Road and about four miles from the A26 Tunbridge Wells to Lewes road. It takes less than 20 minutes to reach Tunbridge Wells (links: internally to Tunbridge Wells) and around 40 minutes to reach either Eastbourne or Brighton.

Schools

The local village school is Rotherfield Primary School. A full list of local schools can be found here
