Pembury
Pembury is just over three miles from Tunbridge Wells and has easy access to the A21 London to Hastings road. It is popular home for local and London bound commuters who can choose to drive, or take a bus, the short distance into Tunbridge and then train to London.
The earliest record of Pembury dates back to the eleventh century when a village called Pepenbury was noted and in 1709 the first toll road in Kent was opened between Pembury and Sevenoaks following more or less the route of the A21 today. Fortunately, modern Pembury has its own bypass so most of the traffic within it is local.
For well over 100 years, brick and tile making were very important industries locally, although the only evidence today is the legacy of road names such as Red Row and Slate Row.
The Pembury Village News, a full colour quarterly magazine, regularly reports on all aspects of Pembury life and is a good introduction to the local area and what’s going on in the community. Read the Online version here.
On the northern side of the village green, you’ll find The Camden Arms, an impressive building built in about 1820 and a popular pub and restaurant.
Being so close to Royal Tunbridge Wells, you can easily enjoy the shops and nightlife there. Click Royal Tunbridge Wells to find out more about transport links to London, Gatwick and Heathrow.
