Penshurst

« Back to Local Guides for Kent

Royal Tunbridge Wells Set in glorious countryside in the High Weald, Penshurst is a picturesque village over 800 years old. It is encircled by the rivers Medway and Eden, and boasts an outstanding ancestral home that has stood alongside the village church for over 600 years. This, along with the village inn, The Leicester Arms Hotel, and cricket played on one of the oldest pitches in the country, make it an attractive and desirable place to live.

The history of the village is tied to Penshurst Place a mediaeval masterpiece that has been home of the Sidney family since 1552. The 11-acre formal walled garden, with records dating back to 1346 is one of the oldest gardens in private ownership and it remains much as it was when constructed by Sir Henry Sidney in the Elizabethan era. Both the house and gardens are open to the public and it is a popular tourist destination.

The nearest towns are Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks which are a short drive away, although there is a train service from Penshurst Station which in reality is two miles away in Chiddington Causway. There are trains to London with a journey time of around an hour as well as trains to Croydon and Gatwick Airport – approximately 40 minutes away.
