Rusthall

« Back to Local Guides for Kent

Southborough & High BroomsRusthall is about a mile west of Royal Tunbridge Wells just off the A264. The main attraction in the village is Toad Rock which lies to the east of the village. Toad Rock is a natural rock formation that looks like a sitting toad standing on an outcrop of sandstone. Other outcrops can be seen throughout the Tunbridge Wells and Rusthall Common areas. At one time it was believed that the rock was an ancient sphinx, but in fact Toad Rock and other local outcrops were in fact eroded into their present forms by wind action during the last Ice Age.

Tunbridge Wells Commons Conservators works to restore the Commons to how they looked at the beginning of the last century by reversing some of the worst effects of scrub growth and restoring areas of heath and grassland, to properly manage those areas of established woodland planned for retention, to restore ponds, expose overgrown rock formations, and reopen some historic viewpoints.

Friends of Tunbridge Wells & Rusthall Commons are also active in maintaining and developing the Commons.
